Five Things I Learned From Bleaching My Hair

It was a rainy Saturday, I was bored and looking for something to do. I thought getting a new hair color would be exciting.

I found the highest-rated salon and scheduled a consultation. I asked for a subtle very-natural-looking balayage. The stylist said to expect around $300 or more. She couldn’t give me an accurate price until the service is done.

This scared me. A haircut at this place was between $40 to $55, which is fair for the area, but what makes a hair color appointment worth $300?

It didn’t make sense, as drugstores and supermarkets sell hair color kits in hundreds of shades for only $2.50. Why would someone charge so much to create a custom color and do it on you?

I spent time searching more affordable salons and had consultations. I met with several stylists and each time, it was either a problem with availability or an off-feel. Not every stylist understood what I wanted. I had a sense of mistrust for others.

I decided to take matters in my own hands — color my hair myself. I’ve used at-home boxed dyes before, but this time I took a trip to Sally to get some professional hair color and bleached my own hair.

The results cost me around $10 and turned out amazing. I was so satisfied!
